Tweets, texts, emails, etc – the amazing thing about social media is that it is so social. At some point, we’ve all probably sent emails and texts to people we never intended. In those messages, there may have been something they considered inappropriate or hurtful. There are others who seem to delight in using social media as an opportunity to blast, bash and tear down others. The blessing of being able to communicate with so many through social media can become a curse if not used in a God-centered and biblically responsible way.
Allow me to take some liberty with three New Testament texts, but I think you’ll get the point. “Whether you text, tweet or email, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). “Let no corrupting talk come out of your digital devices, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). Hear Jesus on the matter: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they send or share, for by your posts and shares you will be justified, and by your posts and shares you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).
Philippians 4:8 ought to be thoughtfully considered in every area of life, but especially in using social media.
- Is it true? Are you sure about it? Is it only partially true?
- Is it honorable? Does our use of social media reflect godly character and concern for the glory of God?
- Is it just? Are my texts, tweets, emails fair and upright with others? Would I want to be treated in the same way I treat others in social media?
- Is it pure? Am I holy, innocent and pure in the use of such technology?
- Is it lovely? Are people blessed and encouraged?
- Is it commendable, excellent and praiseworthy?
Or should the word “NOT” be placed in front of these three expressions?
Before hitting send, these are a few things well worth considering.
