Many of us would be much better off spiritually, mentally and emotionally if we only better listened to the little ones. Recently this truth struck me yet again to the depth of my soul. If we really listened to the words that children sing in praise to God, our faith would be much greater, our theology more biblically robust and our lives more beautiful and Christlike. Let me give you some examples of exactly what I mean.
(1). “My God is SO big, so strong and so mighty – there’s nothing My God cannot do! The mountains are His. The valleys are His. The trees are His handiwork too. My God is SO big, so strong and so mighty – there’s nothing my God cannot do!”
(2). “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; they are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me – the Bible tells me so.”
(3). “The B-I-B-L-E – Yes, that’s the book for me! I stand upon the word of God – the B-I-B-L-E.”
(4). “Oh be careful little mouth (eyes, ears) what you say (see, hear). Oh be careful little mouth what you say. For the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little mouth what you say.”
(5). “The wise man built his house upon the rock…and the rains came tumbling down. The rains came down and the floods came up…and the wise man’s house stood firm. So, build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ…and the blessings will come down.”
(6). “I am a sheep and the Lord is my Shepherd, watching over my soul. My soul to keep guarding over me ever, watching wherever I go. And when the winds blow, He is my shelter! And when I’m lost and alone, He rescues me! And when the Lion comes, He is my victory! Constantly watching over me. He is constantly watching over me.”
(7). “I’ve got a joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart, down in my heart, down in my heart. I’ve got a joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart, down in my heart – to stay!”
During pandemics and crises, during good times and bad, there’s incredibly solid doctrinal truth behind children’s songs like these. Are we listening to what the children sing? Hear Jesus: “Truly, I say unto you, unless you turn and become like a little child, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).
